I chose to do John Donne’s, “Batter my heart, three-person God, for You” because it was short and looked fairly easy to understand. However, the more I read and analyze it the more complex it becomes. If you merely skim over the poem it seems to be talking about God and how he wants to follow him, but as you look into the poem it starts to have a deeper meaning. The man wants to follow God and have a relationship with him. He wants God to change his heart so that he can worship and follow God whole-heartedly. He knows that everything in this world is pulling him away from God, and that is why he talks about being “betrothed” to God’s enemy, which is the devil. He is saying that the devil is pulling himself away from God, and he does not want that to be the truth. He wants to be free from the devil, and he wants God to help him turn away from the devil. The man is wants the Lord to take him and never let the devil drag him back down. He does not want the devil to take hold of his soul ever again, so he asks and begs the Lord to help him. I believe that this poem is talking about Christianity in a way. The man wants to give up what he has and follow the Lord completely. He wants to flee from the devil and worship the Lord only.
This is a really good analysis of this poem. I think that in a way this poem might be Donne’s prayer to God to help him become closer, and to get away from the devil and from sins as he states in the poem.
The man does want the Lord to take hold of his heart and to not let the devil over take him again He wants the Lord to overrule his heart. He knows that his life will be ruined if he doesn’t let the Lord come into his heart, and overtake the devil. He is pleading to God for his salvation. He wants to be forgiven and for the Lord, to not let him go back to the devil, the Lord’s enemy. I think this is John Donne’s way of telling the world about his own salvation.
I definitely agree with the points that you made here. I believe that the man wanted to have a better relationship to God and he knew that he was going to have to change to do that. He presented a open mind to changing his life to become faithful and become closer to God.
I agree. I got the same thing from reading this poem. I believe that he wanted to have a better relationship with God, and was doing everything that he could to achieve that goal.
I completely agree with your ideas of this poem. They are very similar to what I have down for my blog. Like you said, I believe that the narrator realized how he was over taken by the devil and that he needed a deeper relationship with God. He realized that he could not do it own his own and needed God to ” batter his heart” in order to get him broken to where he needed to be.
I totally agree with you about this poem. The poem I analyzed was also talking about God. I think that all of his works were based on this idea. This poem should be read today because it is still one hundred percent true. This is like a prayer. He is begging, asking for God’s help to be saved.
